Donors of Columbia College named scholarships met their recipients at the annual Dean's Scholarship Reception on February 7. Each year, nearly 1,200 Columbia College students receive named scholarships. Students are matched with scholarships based on their intellectual pursuits, extracurricular achievements, hometowns and plans for the future, among other factors.

The Columbia University Office of Financial Aid and Educational Financing has recently expanded its walk-in hours to better accommodate students. Students can now visit the financial aid office and meet with a financial aid officer any time Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Nearly 200 members of the Class of 2013 gathered on January 28 for the launch of the 2013 Senior Fund. The event raised nearly $7,500, securing a $5,440 pledge from College Dean James J. Valentini and placing the fund well on its way to its goal of $22,000 by May.

Bernice Tsai CC ’96 has been named senior executive director of Columbia College Alumni Affairs. Tsai comes to Columbia from Citigroup, where she headed a new team focused on driving engagement and loyalty. She will assume her responsibilities on January 7.

Columbia College has announced the names of 22 seniors who will be initiated into Phi Beta Kappa, the national honor society. The students were chosen by a faculty selection committee of Phi Beta Kappa members based on the breadth, depth and rigor of their academic programs, as well as recommendations from faculty members who have worked closely them.

The Humanity in Action Fellowship brings together international groups of students to study human rights and to produce original research exploring how and why individuals and societies resist intolerance and stand up for democratic values. Fellows participate in month-long programs in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Lyon or Warsaw.  Current sophomores, juniors, seniors and recent graduates in all academic disciplines are eligible to apply. Applications are due January 10, 2013.

Teodolinda Barolini, the Lorenzo Da Ponte Professor of Italian and chair of the Department of Italian, and Richard Lansing CC ’65, professor of Italian studies and comparative literature at Brandeis, are receiving the Modern Language Association of America’s 15th annual Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Publication Award for a Manuscript in Italian Literary Studies for their work, “Dante’s Lyrics: Poems of Youth and the Vita Nuova.”

Benjamin Jealous CC ’94, president of the NAACP since 2008, has been named to Fortune’s “40 Under 40” list for 2012. Jealous, 39, is a fifth-generation member of the civil rights organization and the youngest president in its history.
