The Core Curriculum has been a defining aspect of a Columbia College education since 1919. The Core is more than a set of texts; it is a distinct way of learning that has an impact on alumni long after they leave Morningside Heights. The expansion of the Global Core provides students with the same type of interdisciplinary pedagogical approach as Literature Humanities and Contemporary Civilization, but focuses on cultures outside of the Western canon. Beyond the Core, Columbia College now offers more than 125 majors and concentrations across the humanities, sciences and social sciences. New majors, such as sustainable development, neuroscience and behavior, and our joint program in computer science and statistics, keep the College curriculum refreshed and relevant in the 21st century. Research opportunities complement the Columbia academic experience by offering students hands-on experience to put their academic theories into practice while working alongside Columbia’s world-renowned faculty.
