Columbia College Women hosted its first event celebrating new female
voices in fiction on May 8 in the President’s Room at Faculty House.
Elena Cabral ’93, ’99J, an adjunct professor at the Journalism
School, organized and moderated the event. Melissa de la Cruz ’93 read
from Blue Bloods , her recently published novel, and from Fresh Off the Boat,
her 2005 novel inspired by her adolescent years of cultural transition from the
Philippines to the United States. Jennifer Anglade Dahlberg ’93 read from
her debut novel, Uptown and Down, which draws from her experiences as a
Haitian-American growing up in New York, and Tova Mirvis ’95, ’98
Arts read from her second novel, The Outside World, and from her bestselling
debut novel, The Ladies Auxiliary, which chronicles the tightly knit Orthodox
Jewish community in Memphis where she grew up. More than 80 attendees from classes
ranging from 1987–2005 attended the event and mingled afterward for book
signings and refreshments. For more information on CCW, visit
