Thanks for
the many responses so far to my pleas for life updates, all of
which have come by way of e-mail, an interesting comment on the
times. Remember that you can also visit the "College '76
Classnotes" website (www.english.udel.edu/moneyhun/college76.htm)
for current and archived columns. I'd like to begin posting other
material to the site, so please send me not only copy for the
column but also photos (from Columbia days or after) for scanning
and uploading as well as URLs of your personal websites for a list
of links.

her trusty Palm Pilot, which she consults during free time at
traffic lights. Write Paul at sterne@us.ibm.com or sterne@attglobal.net and Anna at
sterne@palm.net or AnnaSterne@aol.com.

Being married
to a Barnard graduate, I get to read the other alum magazine as
well. Occasionally, interesting facts are to be gleaned. Did you
know that Hiram Lopez is in private practice and raising a
daughter (Erika, 2) with his wife, Ivonne Morales Lopez B'77? Sez
so on page 47 of Barnard magazine's winter 2000 issue:
thanks to Ruth Leibowitz (B'77).
Meanwhile,
there have been two reported sightings at Johns Hopkins. Gregory
Ball teaches in the psychology department there, with joint
appointments at the School of Medicine and the School of Hygiene
and Public Health. He runs a research laboratory where students
investigate the effect of hormones on brain functions. Greg notes,
"My current research and teaching interests are based directly on
research and coursework that I was involved in at Columbia and
Barnard as an undergraduate." On the personal front, in February,
Greg and his wife, Margaret, had a baby, Alice Angela, who will no
doubt be fighting with her brother, John Leland (born June 1998),
for many years to come.
At the same
institution, veteran dad Harold Lehmann is a professor of
pediatrics at the School of Medicine, working on "medical
informatics, educational technology, decision analysis, and
literature synthesis" when he is not involved in the really
arcane stuff.
Like Greg (or
me, for that matter), Harold finds continuities between his
academic concerns now and things that occupied him during his
college years. His children are well past the diaper and baby food
stage: musical Amalya is 9 and train-obsessed Gil is 5. Actually,
both kids are musical, something which Harold credits to his wife
of 11 years, Rivka Shafer. (Come to think of it, I can't recall him
being able to carry a tune.) You can say "Hi, Harold" at: lehmann@jhmi.edu.

Michael
Nash writes, "Shalom from the Holy Land. I currently work as an
otolaryngologist at the Soroka (Ben Gurion) University Medical
Center, in Beersheva (yes, the very spot where Abraham once
walked). Current status, married plus three. If you ever pass this
way, drop me a line and we can meet."
Ace PR man
Tom Mariam, intent on being in every column for the next 50
years, concocted breaking news just for our deadline: "I am
engaged! Yes, after 43 years I have finally succumbed. My
bride-to-be, Alyce Appleman, is a special ed teacher from
Westchester who is special in every way. We met on a trip to Asia
last summer and will be married, coincidentally, a year to the day
we met. She has Rangers season tickets and bakes great brownies -
so what more can I ask? Turns out she used to sit two rows in front
of me at many important Ranger games, including the one most recent
to our meeting - Gretzky's finale. We're going to honeymoon in
Tahiti, but will be back in time, of course, for the kickoff of the
Columbia 2000 football season, though Alyce prefers getting her
nails done to Ivy League football." Tom adds, "We're starting to
house hunt in Westchester, near where Alyce currently lives and
teaches. So I'll be a suburbanite in due course. My weekends are
turning into the Great House Hunt. After looking at what you get
for hundreds of thousands of dollars, John Jay doesn't seem like
such a bad deal."
Big news on
the home front for your dutiful scribe of these past 22 years: I am
leaving my post as president of our regional Chamber and moving
into the pop profession of dot.com entrepreneur. By the time you
read this I will be senior vice president at Lexitech Worldwide.
Check us out at Lexitech.com. I'll still be involved in Connecticut
politics, but for the time being as a pushy high technology
executive and not a contemplative policy maven. This will be lots
of fun. Stay in touch and have a great summer.
