INDUCTED: On
October 2, Profesors David Rosand '59 and Jack L.
Snyder were inducted as fellows of the American Academy of Arts
and Sciences. They are among 152 fellows and 27 foreign honorary
members chosen in recognition of distinguished contributions to
science, scholarship, public affairs, and the arts.
An expert in
Italian Renaissance art, Rosand is the Meyer Schapiro Professor of
Art History. His books include Titian and the Venetian
Woodcut, The Meaning of the Mark: Leonardo and Titian,
and Painting in Sixteenth-Century Venice: Titian, Veronese,
Tintoretto. He joined the faculty in 1964, and has served twice
as chairman of the art history department, as director of Art
Humanities, and as chairman of the Society of Fellows in the
Humanities. In 1998, Rosand received the Great Teacher Award from
the Society of Columbia Graduates.
Snyder is the
Robert and Renee Belfer Professor of International Relations and
the chair of the Department of Political Science. A specialist in
international security, international relations theory, and
post-Soviet affairs, and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses
on nationalism and comparative methods. His books include The
Ideology of the Offensive, Myths of Empire, and Civil
Wars, Insecurity, and Intervention.
The election
of these professors brings the number of Columbia fellows at the
Academy to 100. Established in 1780 by founding father John Adams,
the Academy seeks to "cultivate every art and science" of value to
a "free, independent and virtuous people."
ADVANCED: George
Sansom Professor of History Carol Gluck has been selected as a
fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences
at Stanford for the 1999-2000 academic year.
