Reflecting on the Journey
On the importance of teamwork and collaboration
"When Columbia launched the Columbia Design Challenge: Confronting the Ebola Crisis last October, it seemed natural for us to team up and try to tackle the challenges of the Ebola epidemic. And there's definitely no better feeling than to be able to contribute to fixing a crisis with your best friends as your partners. It has opened my eyes to what is really important about being at an institution like Columbia: the ability to surround yourself with your closest peers to try to make a difference in the world."

On the importance of teamwork and collaboration
"Swimming is a unique sport, requiring an intense focus on the individual effort as well as the team. And so, when ... our relay team won, it was the culmination of each individual swim that became the accomplishment of the entire group. But the true wealth to be gained comes not from wins in the pool, personal best times or even varsity records. Instead, my teammates and I will leave Columbia forever changed by our time together. The friendship we share is grounded not only in the pool, but also in the classroom and throughout New York City. We have forged an unshakeable bond by doing this side by side, lap by lap, day after day."

"We believe that we can encourage Native students to go to college. Ultimately, we believe that through discussion, mentorship and knowledge, we can empower young Native people, ourselves included, to be agents of change in Native communities. And so we are here, to spend one week in each of five communities over a three-week period, engaging, encouraging and empowering Native students through AlterNATIVE’s program."
