The Robert D.L. Gardiner Foundation, established by Robert David Lion Gardiner CC’32, has donated $3 million to the Columbia University Faculty of Arts and Sciences to establish the Robert Gardiner-Kenneth T. Jackson Professorship in the history department. The new chair will focus on teaching New York history, Jackson’s specialty.
Eight Columbia College alumni are presenting films at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival in Utah this month. College alumni who will be presenting include directors, producers, editors and screenwriters.
Five accomplished alumni will be presented with 2016 John Jay Awards for distinguished professional achievement at the annual John Jay Awards Dinner on Thursday, March 10, 2016.
We continue to mourn the loss of the three Columbia community members who lost their lives in Honduras last week. As a reminder, the University will hold a candlelight vigil at 6 p.m. tonight (Tuesday, Jan. 19) on Low Plaza to honor the memories of Columbia College student Olivia Erhardt, Barnard College student Daniella Moffson, and Columbia College parent, General Studies student and CUMC nurse Abigail Flanagan.

We were deeply saddened to report the death of three members of our community, Columbia College sophomore Olivia Erhardt, Barnard College junior Daniella Moffson, and Abigail Flanagan, a General Studies student and nurse practitioner at the Columbia University Medical Center. These students were in a bus accident while on a humanitarian mission in Honduras. Several other students were injured in the accident, and we are working to provide support and help them return home. Columbia medical personnel and College staff are traveling to Honduras overnight to provide on-site assistance.

Columbia undergraduates Katherine Jin CC’16, Kevin Tyan CC’16 and Jason Kang SEAS’16, founders of the company Kinnos, have been named to the Forbes “30 Under 30” Healthcare list.
Columbia College has announced the names of 23 seniors who will be initiated into Phi Beta Kappa, the national honor society, on Friday, January 22.
The Deans’ Student Assistance Fund supported more than 400 Columbia College and Columbia Engineering students with unanticipated costs during its initial semester, including providing students with FLEX meal funding during Fall Break and Thanksgiving Break, when the dining halls are closed. Other examples of situations when the Deans’ Student Assistance Fund may be used include travel home for a family emergency, unexpected health care costs and cold weather clothing needs.
