Gillian Young, Core Lecturer.
Inspired by the Socratic method at the heart of the Core Curriculum, this class will stoke a lively debate around the art history canon, namely, history’s focus on male artists. Art historian Linda Nochlin’s groundbreaking 1971 article, which challenged gendered notions of artistic genius, will be our jumping-off point. Guided by Nochlin’s provocation, we will reexamine key points in the syllabus by putting more familiar Art Hum protagonists into conversation with set of powerful female artists: Artemisia Gentileschi, Mary Cassatt, Frida Kahlo and Carolee Schneemann.

Maria Bo, Core Lecturer.
How have our definitions of freedom in the West shaped the kinds of universality that we can imagine? Looking at Plato, St. Augustine, Rousseau and Kant, this class will strive to compare definitions of freedom and the social/international implications of these definitions. Is freedom the ability to know oneself, escape the confines of oneself or be able to define the contours of that self? In a post-Cold War era in which “American freedom” is both more pervasive internationally and more endangered domestically than before, what does it matter, on the international stage, how we define the freedom we are known for?

Kate Brassel, Core Lecturer.
Thucydides the Athenian wrote his dramatic History of the Peloponnesian War “to last forever” — for future readers, like students of the Core Curriculum, who might see events repeated. What does Thucydides want us to learn from this story of Athenian democracy at war with herself and with other powers? Why is Thucydides now being revived in public discourse about the United States and her foreign competitors? This mini-seminar will explore these questions through the lively characters who populate Thucydides’ narrative, and who struggle over the most pressing questions of their — and our — time.LocationNorthwest Corning Building, Room 501

Walter Frisch, the H. Harold Gumm/Harry and Albert Von Tilzer Professor of Music; and Chair, Department of Music.
Much of Beethoven’s music, especially his symphonies, imparts a sense of achieving triumph over adversity, resolution after conflict or serenity after turbulence — ideas that resonate with the Core Curriculum’s basic values. But because music is more abstract than many of the other arts, it can be interpreted for incompatible ends. In this class, we will consider how the Ninth Symphony, whose renowned final movement is a setting of Schiller’s Ode to Joy, has been a palimpsest onto which humanity has written (and overwritten) changing and often conflicting values. It has served to unite and to separate, to lift up and subjugate. It is at once us and them, and therein lies its continued relevance.LocationMudd Building, Room 833
