Reflecting on the Journey
On the importance of a knowledge base
“Being a philosophy major gives you the tools on how to think about things in a way that’s incredibly relevant to entrepreneurship. If entrepreneurship is all about changing the world, you first have to know how the world works. The world is made less of stone and steel and more of ideas and systems, and understanding those worldviews and systems is more important than ever.”

On the importance of a knowledge base
"I left [Fiji] with a better sense of the entanglement between the conservation of marine resources and socioeconomics, politics and globalization. The overharvesting of shallow water sea cucumbers has led to dangerous methods of deepwater collection, which has harmed many Fijian men and their families. I am certain that the work I did this summer was a launching pad for my future goals in marine research and conservation. I learned, in real time and from the people directly affected, how to maneuver around research challenges, and how science and conservation influence and are influenced by so many additional factors."

“I started cello in 7th grade and was still pretty new at the instrument, so I wanted a setting with a willing and perceptive audience. [Nursing home residents] always enjoyed it so much and a concept was forged in my mind between healing and music. From performing, I’ve realized that the arts and human interaction offer temporary reprieves from suffering, if not lasting cognitive benefits. I have [nursing home] residents come up to me after I play and say, ‘That meant so much. Thank you.’… I want to bring this kind of individual connection to my work as a doctor.”
