Columbia to honor students at King’s Crown Leadership Awards

Students and student organizations will be honored for their leadership and involvement on campus at the 2013 King’s Crown Leadership Awards Ceremony in Low Library on April 11.

The annual awards, sponsored by Columbia Student Affairs, recognize the significant contributions of Columbia College and Columbia Engineering students and student organizations to the Columbia community. Awards are presented to both individuals and organizations in eight categories: community building, ethics and morality, Columbia spirit, civic responsibility, innovation and enhancement, bridge building and health and wellness. Certificates of Distinctions for Leadership Excellence are awarded to up to 10 individuals and 10 organizations per category. 

The award categories and descriptions are as follows:
 
Community Building
Recipients of this award best exemplify the fabric of Columbia community building, either through bonding within a specific component of our community or bridging across several groups of our community, to offer cultural, political, social, and/or wellness inter-connectedness and relationship-building.
 
Ethics & Morality
Recipients of this award best support the Columbia model for ethical decision-making and sound moral judgment. The context for these awards is specifically focused on the students and groups that have conducted their affairs well through difficult situations and/or have worked to instill strong morals and ethics in others.
 
Columbia Spirit
Recipients of this award capture and display the best of Columbia spirit. This includes the essence of "school spirit" and pride as a dedicated member of our community, as well as leaders and groups that contribute to local, regional, and national recognition for sports, performance, cultural and arts activities and academic competition.
 
Civic Responsibility
Recipients of this award best promote civic engagement, responsible citizenship and global citizenship. This includes both on-campus and off-campus activities, initiatives and service.
 
Innovation & Enhancement
Recipients of this award have created, improved or enhanced a service, program, or process thus contributing positively to the Columbia campus and its diverse stakeholders.
 
Bridge Building
Recipients of this award set the standard for bringing diverse constituents together for the purpose of promoting understanding, valuing diversity, and forging agreements around complex issues. The impact may be a policy, program, or practice that improves relationships, enhances our campus vibrancy, and creates opportunities for intergroup work.
 
Indelible Mark
This award recognizes the accomplishments of students and groups in implementing sustainable change for the benefit of our community and/or in leaving a lasting impression on the campus community.
 
Health & Wellness
Recipients of this award best exemplify the spirit of caring for and about the members of our vast and diverse community. A special focus is placed on the individual/group’s ability to establish an example for a healthy balance of responsibilities, duties and activities through their own leadership.
