Elif is an international student coming from Romania. In Romania, Elif developed an organic fertilizer that decontaminates the environment by using pollutant residues from the wood, beer and milk industries. After receiving the Gold Medal at the International Environmental Project Olympiad 2013, she patented her fertilizer under the trademark WMBW Bioforten. For this invention, Elif was the youngest scientist to be awarded by the government the prize Romanian for Romanians on Romania’s National Day at a national TV station for “having revolutionized agriculture”. One year later, at the International Environment and Sustainability Project Olympiad, she was awarded the Bronze Medal for coming up with the idea of an ecological soil, which is almost unaffected by acid rain thus supporting agriculture in industrialized areas. She interned at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and researched at the National Institute for Research in Pedology and Agrochemistry on projects concerning the current nitrate pollution in Romania as well as worked with one of the most renowned environmental Romanian NGOs to convert used vegetable oil into biofuel. She coorganized the first international symposium on applied climatology in Romania, where she also presented her work on the Romanian shore vulnerability to hazardous climatic phenomena. Elif designed the agricultural and water system of the space station she and her team envisioned for the NASA Space Settlement Design Contest, where they obtained the First Prize and an invitation to present their ideas in the International Space Development Conference in Washington DC. As an avid supporter of sustainable development, Elif presented her ideas of reducing global poverty through microfinance in agriculture at the US House of Representatives, the Word Bank Office of Romania or even the United Nations’ Commission for Social Development session where she was mentioned by Romania’s Minister of Labor.
