Description:
Currently undecided as to the final field of research I would like to pursue. Past research includes work in the FitzGerald Lab at the University of Pennsylvania. We looked at the role of COX-1 and TXA2 to understand why aspirin resistance occurs. We did this by creating azide aspirin (traditional aspirin with an azide group attached to the acetyl group) to be used as a probe for determining what aspirin was acetylating. After completing a modified western blot, it was found that azide aspirin in fact acetylates other proteins in addition to COX, however the identity of these proteins needs to be determined. In addition, the azide aspirin was pharmacologically compared to traditional aspirin to determine if they inhibited COX-1 and -2 similarly in an in vitro assay.
