Arthur Ashkin CC'47 Wins Nobel Prize in Physics
Arthur Ashkin CC'47 is the latest recipient of the Nobel Prize in physics. His notable scientific career might have earned him the title of "father of laser radiation pressure,” but when he won the Nobel for his groundbreaking invention of “optical tweezers,” which use lasers to trap and manipulate tiny particles in beams of light, he simply referred to himself in an interview with NJ.com as “an old geezer.”
Columbia College appoints dean of Undergraduate Global Engagement
Columbia College, in partnership with Columbia Engineering and the School of General Studies, is pleased to announce the appointment of Shannon Marquez as the dean of Undergraduate Global Engagement. She will provide leadership for the collaborative development of a comprehensive vision and strategy in order to ensure all Columbia undergraduates have the opportunity to achieve defined global competencies.
