On February 6, composer and musician Nico Muhly ’03 did a Q&A with The New York Times, “Nico Muhly on the ‘Ecstatic Disruption’ of Philip Glass’s Music.” Muhly effuses about Glass’s work saying, “Philip’s body of work has these forgotten gems. Finding this is like finding a door in your house to a room you never knew existed.”
Holder Initiative hosts first event in American Voter Project series
On January 24, the Eric H. Holder Initiative for Civil and Political Rights hosted American Voter Project: The Impact and Future of the Electoral College, the first in its five-part American Voter Project series being held this spring.
Alumni in the News: January 29, 2018
Robert K. Kraft ’63, owner of the New England Patriots, will be going to Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis. His team will face off against the Philadelphia Eagles on February 4. This will be the team’s tenth appearance at the Super Bowl; they have won five previous games (2017, 2015, 2005, 2004 and 2002).
Alumni in the News: January 16, 2018
Several Lions made an appearance at the Golden Globe Awards on January 7, with investigative reporter Jodi Kantor ’96 asking insightful questions on the red carpet and activist Ai-Jen Poo ’96attending as the guest of Meryl Streep. Eli Bush ’09, a producer of Lady Bird, came away a winner when the film won in the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category. Photographer Damon Winter ’97 was on hand to photograph the event; he was also featured in The New York Times’ “The Year in Pictures,” a roundup of the best photos of 2017.
The Roger Lehecka Double Discovery Center appoints new executive director
Columbia College has appointed Kecia Hayes, a Teachers College alumna with more than 20 years of education experience, as the new executive director of the Roger Lehecka Double Discovery Center (DDC), a program that works to enhance higher education opportunities for local low-income and first-generation youth ages 12–27.

This year’s John Jay Award honorees have made a mark on the world of entertainment, finance, public service and beyond — and Columbia College will celebrate their professional achievements on Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at the 40th annual John Jay Awards Dinner, which raises funds for the John Jay National Scholars Program.
Alumni in the News: December 18, 2017
Rujeko Hockley ’05 was chosen to co-curate the Whitney Biennial, opening spring 2019. Inaugurated in 1932, the Biennial is the longest-running continual survey of contemporary American art. In a press release announcing the event, Scott Rothkopf, the Whitney’s deputy director for programs and the Nancy and Steve Crown Family Chief Curator, said: “Jane [Panetta, the co-curator] and Ru are two of the most compelling and engaged curatorial voices of our moment, with broad and sensitive instincts for artistic and cultural relevance.”
