Philip and Cheryl Milstein Scholarship Recipient (2014 - 2018)
“The Milsteins have given me the opportunity of a lifetime at Columbia College. I look forward to continuing my study of art history, philosophy and French, and to studying abroad in Europe next summer. I am so grateful for these opportunities.”
Is there a faculty member who has inspired your academic interests or plans?
“My creative nonfiction professor, Mark Rozzo, sparked my interest in creative journalism. His seminar, ‘Traditions in Nonfiction,’ sparked my interest in magazine writing and has made me appreciate a range of topics in writing I was not aware of.”
What experiences outside of the classroom have you enjoyed the most?
“I write for the blog Bit of News, which is published daily and has a relatively broad audience. I write about any topic I am interested in, and I find this a rewarding experience that also hones my writing skills and helps me discover new topics.”
How has Columbia’s location enhanced your College experience?
“As an avid lover of art, I love New York City’s museums, such as the Met and MoMA, and the incredible street art that you can see simply by walking. Also, I have visited the Metropolitan Opera a few times this semester, which has been a fascinating experience.”
What have you learned from your peers and classmates?
"Especially in my fiction writing workshop, my peers have shown me ways to write about the world and the different ways in which people’s minds work. It is interesting to see what topics people choose to write about and what recurring themes run through their stories; writing shows you a lot about the individuals, and I feel like I know a lot about my classmates on a personal level even though we’ve only been together for one semester."
