DDC Celebrates 40 Years of Service
Double Discovery Center celebrated its 40th anniversary on June 11 on South
Lawn with a barbecue and carnival games. Bill Perkins, deputy majority
leader, New York City Council, presented DDC with a proclamation honoring its
outstanding contributions to the City of New York.
DDC was founded in 1965 by a group of Columbia undergraduates led
by Roger Lehecka ’67, Steven Weinberg ’66, Arnold Saltzman ’36 and history professor Jim
Shenton ’49. It offers academic, career, college,
financial aid and personal development services year-round to low-income,
first-generation college-bound youth in New York City with the goal
of increasing their rate of high school graduation, college entrance
and college completion. On average, 96 percent of DDC students finish
high school and enroll in college. For more information, visit the
Double Discovery Center Web site.
