ALUMNI UPDATES
Surround Within, an intricate sculpture installation that exhibited last summer in Empire Fulton-Ferry
State Park in Brooklyn, is the first public art created by Karen Kang ’92, a critically acclaimed
sculptress. For the New York-based Kang, the appeal of public art is in its accessibility and its potential
for surprise. “Surround Within is a sanctuary of quiet and rest where one is challenged to enlarge
one’s openness to allow touch from others and hence healing,” says Kang. With the Manhattan
skyline and the Brooklyn Bridge as backdrops, the installation, which consists of five stone sculptures,
bamboo and pine needles, subtly merges the chaos of urban life with the serenity of nature. Kang will
exhibit other work in Maine, Germany and the Netherlands this summer. For more, visit
