OBITUARIES
Jessica A. Zauner ’08, Student
Jessica A. Zauner ’08 died on April 2 in her hometown of Greenwich, Conn. She was 19. Zauner, an economics major and a resident
of Wien Hall, “was a deeply caring friend and family member,” Dean of Student Affairs Chris
Colombo said in an e-mail to students. “Her dedication to those around her was apparent in her
unyielding support for her friends, her commitment to literacy projects and her love for her family.”
Born in New York City on September 26, 1986, Zauner was an alumna of Hackley School in Tarrytown,
N.Y. She was a four-year member of the field hockey team and also played lacrosse and ran track. Zauner
won the Girl Scouts’ Gold Award, the organization’s highest honor. At Columbia, she tutored
underprivileged students through Community Impact.
“She was a lovely and bright and caring young woman,” Walter Johnson, Hackley headmaster,
said in a Spectator article. “She wrote children’s books in Spanish and English
and read them to kids. She was a good friend to many Hackley students and respected and loved by many
teachers.”
“Jessica was deeply connected to her family,” said Vania Herdoon ’08. “She
hoped to follow in her father and sister’s footsteps by pursuing a career in finance. Jessica
also felt strongly about donating to charity. She hoped to achieve success in her career so that she
would be in a position to give to those less fortunate and make their lives better. The scholarship
fund in her memory is a fitting way to celebrate her life.”
Zauner is survived by her parents, Anna Endres Zauner and Anton Zauner ’73; sister, Erika; grandmothers,
Elizabeth Zauner and Maria Endres; an aunt; an uncle; and cousins. Memorial contributions may be made
